Life in India versus Western world

I have been fortunate enough to travel all over the world and see different cultures and ethnicities. It has been an enriching experience that has taught and inspired me a great deal. What fascinates me most is the glaring difference between living in Europe and other Western countries and staying in India. The contrast can be felt everywhere - in culture, lifestyle, eating habits, clothing, etc. Let me list the main differences.

  • The Indians are a family-oriented breed. It is common to see 2-3 generations living together all their lives. Grandfather, father, son, and all their families live under the same roof. In Western countries, children leave their parent's house as soon as they enter college. Living in a joint family is unheard of there.
  • In India, it is a common practice in towns and cities to keep help for cooking, driving, and other household chores. Affluent families keep 4-to 5 staff to help them do all sorts of odd jobs. In Western countries, people generally do all their jobs themselves and use household staff to the minimum.
  • As labor is cheap in India, we like to call them for small jobs. For fixing a light or a tap, watering the plants, buying groceries, mantling a drawer, or giving a massage. The rates are so cheap that it makes sense to use the available help. In Western countries, labor is so expensive that people prefer to do these small jobs themselves.
  • Indian cooking is very elaborate and time-consuming. Additionally, they love eating and take frequent and heavy meals. So lots of time for Indian women is spent cooking. In the Western world, cooking in everyday life is generally easy and quick. They do not like to waste hours standing in the kitchen.
  • Indian women are very conservative in their dressings. They prefer to wear clothes that cover them completely, even in hot weather. The new generation is experimental in their dressing and wears modern and skimpy clothing, but they are also aware of the system and would not dare to wear it in inappropriate places. The women in Western countries are very bold and fashion-conscious. They do not care for what the others think and wear what they like.
  • In India, most people are still doing arranged marriages, and that too is in the same caste. Love marriages are frowned upon even now. However, we can see the changes slowly creeping in and parents and society are more open to love marriages. Though live-ins are still taboo. In Western countries, people believe in love marriages and arranged marriages are a rarity.
  • In India, people have no sense of following rules anywhere. They will break traffic signals, drive on the wrong side, jump queues, and use 'jugaad' everywhere. In Western countries, they are aware of how to behave in public places and follow the protocol.
  • India is a very patriarchal society where women are never considered equal. Indian women are supposed to take care of their husbands, in-laws, and children and not have a say in important matters of the family. Things are slowly changing with females getting educated in India, but we have a long way to go before matching Western standards.
These are a few of the main differences that I found between the Indian and the Western world.
